Hi, Well you say you have made a board with a usb interface, but now you want to use a SERIAL line to program it with ?? - sounds a bit backwards way around to me.:? Look at the many pages in this forum for JDM programmers - they do work for some folk but many others never get them to work, even on the simplest 16f chips never mind the 18

PICKIT2 is a limited version debugger. It does not support all the MCUs but quite a few from the x14 family. Whatever compiler(or plain asm) you use you need to set it up within MPLAB and configure the debugging tool as PICKIT2. It should be visible in the menu while plugged into the usb.
