There is quite a lot of literature on the subject. A good place to start is with Yang and Rahmat-Samii: "Reflection Phase Characterizations of the ebg Ground Plane for Low Profile Wire antenna Applications".
The difference is: 1- antenna is on the top the layer while ebg at the bottomof the layer 2- two layer, first layer for coplanar antenna and the second layer on the top ebg and the bottom full ground. then this two layer attached togather with spacing to avoid short circuit. Welcome zain04, It's a bit hard to tell from your picture, but it almost looks like the antenna solid ground is still there when the ebg is combined with the antenna - is this the case?

hi I designed and created the dispersion digram for UC-ebg structure and get a band-gap of 9.5 to 11.1, when I place it between two antennas do not take the desired answer!!!!!!! antenna operating frequency is in the band-gap the UC-ebg. What is my problem? Can anyone help me? Thanks
Hi The dimensions of ebg/PBG structures have to be determined by iterating once you have decided upon the shape of the ebg cell. Upon iterating, you can develop mathematical equations based on the results obtained for each iteration. Regards Twisha

I am doing microstrip antenna with ebg structure as ground plane, after simulation the result of return loss shows a value of more than the return loss in microstrip antenna alone. Try to read some papers of Y. Samii and Sievenpiper. You can design a mushroom type ebg materials for metamaterial and use it with patch antenna.

i have read some literature review about the designs of ebg structure. from that, i've found that they use two 50 ohm of microstrip lines at both end of the array of ebg. my question is, is it we use the same formula to obtain the feeding line for the antenna to obtain this microstrip line? and then should i put two ports for this design?

Hi Shahid, You don't need dipoles if you want to simulate the S21 properties of an ebg surface. In HFSS you can put an ebg design (more than 3 cells/mushrooms) at the bottom of a rectangular box. Then you define a PEC BC below the mushrooms (as ground plane), PMC BC in the laterals of the mushrooms (to produce a periodicity) and radiation B

The choice of substrate material is very critical. The evidence of sidelobe reduction can be observed with materials having Er > 9. Perhaps you can call it "ebg structure based on perforated microstrip line" or "periodically loaded microstrip line". Make sure that the structure has the stopband property by simulating a portion of the microstrip line itself without the antennas. The distance of the structure to the antenna feedpoint may have an influence on matching.

hi i guess, farfield in an IEEE transaction by DAN SIEVENPIPER titled HIGH IMPEDANCE EM SURFACE USING ebg he mentions the sentence but without any reference: surface waves if scattered, caues distortion in pattern in form of ripple. DISTORTION AND RIPPLE seem ambiguous to me. ok?
