If you want to update your firmware only with smart phone, than you can do it without the need of having USB OTG, by using USB-hid Bootloaders. I had seen USB hid Boot-Loaders fro Microchip PIC 8-bit series of controller's, but you have to write the smartphone application by your own. USB OTG is not required in this case, but if you want to (...)

Anyone know of a simple Atmel or other solution to try? Is there complicated code to write to make it work so data transfer is semaless as with the I2C/USB?

hi if you are using MicroC, i think you can use the built in library. that will make your work fast and less possibility of errors. people use compilers like microC and CCs C because of this freedom otherwise you can use Hitech C which is ANSI C but you have to write the entire code for the hid setting parameters, you may use google ml

I think you could use the v-usb (formerly avr-usb) its very easy (if you work easily with avr-gcc) to setup an application like that. (there is an example ready to read and write the eeprom of an AVR by USB... it's also hid so you will not need even to install a driver on the computer!!!!) I think this is what you need before going under deep USB a
