I don't know what is your final goal, but, the digital pot is one way to go and the PWM too. Are you worried by cost? I would go the pot way. Just careful and simple programming with a small micro that could be in charge of something else in the design.
Hi, guys I want to build a project from the design idea magazine, but i don't know what to use to drive the frequency control inputs (4pins). As i understand these inputs have to be digital so the pic program can compute using a look-up table and output a desire frequency. Can I use a 4 pin Digital pot or an encoder ? Any Suggestions

try to find uc examples that have builtin comparator like 89C2051 and some picks too. on and . The comparator user in examples for determining unknown input, value of cap and value of resistor. Examples like find value of pot also...... This may also help
