I had tried both of them. I does not had any problems till date using usbASP. There are pcb layouts which use only through hole components available free on net. I prefer usbasp as it is updated regularly than avr doper.

check out your connections. If you are using usb to serial converter it wont work.

For usb conection you can try from Atmel 89C5131. It's not avr architecture (8051 core) but it's easy to use and program.
